How to use Exclusive Tag Categories

Last updated: October 5, 2026

Exclusive tag categories provide precise and consistent control over the tags assigned to students by ensuring that only one tag from a specific category can be applied at a time. This is especially useful for managing selections, such as assigning students to specific housing preferences like single rooms, double rooms, or suites.

This guide uses the example of tagging students as either domestic or international. Follow along to create and implement your own exclusive tag category.

Create an Exclusive Tag Category

To use exclusive tags, start by creating a tag category that enforces exclusivity. Learn more about creating tag categories here.

In the category setup screen, check the box labeled Exclusive Tags to enforce that only one tag from this category can be assigned to an entity at a time.

For this example, we will create a tag category called International Status.

Once saved, exclusive tag categories will be marked with an Exclusive label next to their name in the tag category list.

Create Exclusive Tags

Next, create the tags that represent the mutually exclusive options. There is no limit to the number of tags you can include in an exclusive tag category. Learn more about creating tags here.

In this example, we would create two tags called Domestic and International assigned to the International Status tag category.

Implementing Exclusive Tags

Exclusive tags can be applied dynamically in forms to automate tagging based on student responses.  Learn more about applying tags in forms here.

For this example, a question like “Are you an international student?” can assign the appropriate tag based on the student’s submitted response. If the student later submits a different response, the new tag will automatically replace the initial tagging.

Exclusive Tags Assigned to Entities

An exclusive tag assigned to an entities is denoted with an Exclusive tag for ease of identification.

The entity is tagged Domestic as a result of the student's response.

Manually applying a tag within the exclusive tag category will automatically replace the previously assigned tag, as only one tag from the category can be assigned at a time.

For example, manually assigning International to this entity will automatically replace the Domestic tag as both cannot be assigned concurrently.
