Understanding Applicability Tags

Last updated: October 7, 2026

Applicability tags are conditions that enable you to provide granular access to specific items like meal plans, housing cycles, forms, and more. By using tags from student profiles, such as Freshman, Athlete or Female you can decide which students have access to which items, or who is excluded from them. 📄 Create and Manage Tags

How Applicability Tags Work

Applicability tags are broken down through three conditions: AND, OR, and Exclude. These conditions can be combined to create highly targeted access, ensuring that only the right students can view or participate in specific housing cycles, meal plans, and more.

Applicability: AND

The AND condition restricts visibility to students who match all specified tags for access to a given item.

Example: If your goal is to set up a housing selection phase reserved for first-year athletes, it will feature an Applicability AND requirement using the tags First-Year and Athlete. This setup ensures that only students identified as both first-year and athletes can access the application.

Example: To create a meal plan exclusively for senior commuter students, you would set an Applicability AND requirement with the tags Commuter and Senior. As a result, only those students who meet both criteria will be able to access the meal plan.

Applicability: OR

The OR condition allows students to access an item if they match any one of the specified tags selected.

Example: If a housing cycle is exclusively available to first-year and second-year students, you should use an Applicability OR condition with the tags First-Year and Sophomore. This allows any student tagged as either first-year or sophomore to access the housing cycle.

Example: If a meal plan is exclusively for seniors and commuter students, you would implement an Applicability OR condition using the tags Senior and Commuter. This means that students tagged as either seniors or commuters can access the meal plan, but it would not prevent non-senior commuter students from also having access.

Example: If you are looking to establish an early housing selection phase for athletes and honors students, you would set an Applicability OR condition with the tags Athlete and Honors. This configuration allows students tagged as either athletes or honors students to participate in the selection phase, meaning that non-honor athletes or honors students who are not athletes can also access the application.

Applicability: Exclude

The Exclude condition lets you prevent students with certain tags from accessing certain items, even if they meet other conditions.

Example: If you want to ensure that first-year students do not have access to an upper-class specific meal plan, you would set an Applicability Exclude condition with the tag First-Year. This means that any student tagged as First-Year will be excluded from accessing the meal plan, regardless of any other tags they may have.

Example: If you want to prevent students with financial holds from participating in a housing cycle, you would set an Applicability Exclude condition with the tag Financial Hold. This ensures that students who have the Financial Hold tag will be excluded from accessing the housing cycle, regardless of any other criteria they may meet.
