Configure Roommate Selection Phases
Last updated: October 5, 2026
The roommate selection phase is an optional step in the housing cycle. It allows students to choose their own roommates within a defined timeframe. If a roommate selection phase is not set up, students will not be allowed to select roommates, and administrators will need to manually assign students to roommate groups or process auto-assignments based on defined criteria. This feature eliminates the need for manual roommate assignments when enabled, while still providing flexibility for admins to manage roommate groups as needed. Multiple roommate selection phases can be created to accommodate different student groups, such as first-year or honors students.
Create a Phase
Click Add Phase to create a new roommate selection phase.

Enter a phase name to easily identify the phase.

Select Begin Date and End Date for the roommate selection period, ensuring it aligns with your institution’s timeline

Define eligibility by selecting tags in the Limit to Tags section. Only students who meet all the selected tags will be able to participate in the selection phase.

Add Exclude Tags if needed for groups who should not be included in this specific roommate selection phase.

Create Additional Phases
If your housing cycle provides different student groups with the opportunity to select roommates at different times, you can create multiple phases within the same cycle. This allows you to tailor the roommate selection process for various student groups (e.g., first-year students, returning students, etc.).
Click Add Phase to create another roommate selection phase for a different group of students and assign tags as needed to control eligibility.

Remove a Phase
Click Remove Phase to remove any phase that is not needed.

Next Steps: Configure Room Selection and Move-In Phases
To apply your configurations, click Save if editing an existing cycle or Next to continue setting up a new cycle.
The next steps in the housing cycle setup include configuring the Room Selection Phase (optional), where students select their housing assignments, and the Move-In and Move-Out Phases (required), which define when students can arrive and depart from housing.
