Getting Started with Reporting

Last updated: August 28, 2026

The reporting feature in Housing.Cloud integrates GoodData, a widely-used third-party data visualization tool. GoodData offers housing administrators a powerful way to analyze and visualize housing data. With its intuitive interface and robust capabilities, administrators can gain valuable insights into housing operations and make data-driven decisions.

Insights With Reporting

The reporting feature offers housing administrators the tools needed to create detailed and actionable insights. This functionality supports informed decision-making and strategic planning by allowing administrators to:

  • Generate Comprehensive Reports: Access metrics like occupancy rates, room assignments, and maintenance costs to evaluate operational performance.
  • Analyze Historical Trends: Examine past data to identify shifts in application volume or student preferences, guiding future strategies.
  • Explore Specific Data: Focus on targeted data, such as student demographics or academic distribution for a specific term, to inform decision-making.
  • Customize Visualizations: Use bar charts, line graphs, heatmaps, or other visualizations to effectively communicate key insights.

Managing Reporting Permissions

Reporting permissions in Housing.Cloud allow access to all institution data in the reporting tool. While this provides a comprehensive view, it also means permissions should be managed carefully:

  • Full Data Access: Users with reporting permissions can access all profiles, applications, inventory, and other data, regardless of role-based restrictions elsewhere.
  • Limit Permissions: To safeguard sensitive data, assign reporting permissions only to administrators with the authority to manage this information.
  • System-Wide Impact: Reporting permissions override other visibility settings. Even users restricted to specific roles will access all reporting data.

GoodData currently does not support user-specific data segmentation. Although future updates are planned, institutions should consider this limitation when assigning reporting access.

Creating and Customizing Visualizations

In Housing.Cloud, visualizations—referred to as reports—are powerful tools for turning raw data into actionable insights. The reporting tool includes pre-built templates and customization options that make it easy to tailor visualizations for specific needs:

  • Pre-Built Reports: Start with pre-configured visualizations tailored to common housing metrics, like occupancy rates and maintenance costs. These serve as a foundation for customization.
  • Customizable Visualizations: Modify existing reports or build new ones by changing visualization types, applying filters, and adding calculated metrics to enhance insights.
  • Interactive Dashboards: Create dashboards to monitor key metrics in real-time, providing a comprehensive view of housing operations.
  • Flexible Visualization Options: Represent data visually using bar charts, line charts, pie charts, and other formats for effective communication.
  • Filtering and Sorting: Focus on specific data subsets or organize information for better clarity.
  • Advanced Metrics: Use the Analytical Designer to create calculated metrics or dive into deeper analysis with drag-and-drop tools.
  • Extensive Data Catalog: Access and manage a robust library of data points and attributes to ensure accurate reporting.
  • Export and Share: Save reports and visualizations for team collaboration or external presentations.

To start creating a report:

  1. Duplicate a pre-built report in your workspace to use as a starting point.
  2. Customize the report by modifying visualizations, applying filters, and adding metrics.
  3. Save your report and share it with your team for collaborative decision-making.
